Hygiene Elementary

Setting and Context: 

Mission: We believe every child can learn with confidence and passion. In strong partnership with families and the community, Hygiene fosters rigorous and creative learning experiences.

Vision: At Hygiene Elementary, we inspire and ignite students through meaningful relationships and educational excellence. As we provide innovative learning opportunities and teach problem solving skills, our students are prepared for continued success.

 

Academics: 

Hygiene Elementary has been recognized as a John Irwin School of Excellence. The John Irwin awards are given to schools that demonstrate exceptional academic achievement over time. These schools received an Exceeds Expectations rating on the Academic Achievement indicator of the School Performance Frameworks reflecting exceptional performance in Math, English Language Arts, and Science. 

Hygiene Elementary school has been honored with a  Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Award. This award is given to schools that demonstrate exceptional student growth.

 

Hygiene elementary offers half day preschool and full day kindergarten. The Hub is a before and after school care program, and Late Start morning movies.  They also offer classes throughout the year including Spanish, Pottery, Robotics, and so much more.

 

Hygiene Elementary is a STEAM focus school that emphasizes curriculum and learning in sciences, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics. Each year the entire school takes on a full integration of STEAM learning through HawkAIR. During our HawkAIR event, we pick a new destination each year to “travel to” as we transform our building and our learning through deep, engaging experiences.

Classroom Environment: 

During my eight weeks at Hygiene Elementary I worked in a majority teacher centered environment. I created class projects for my students that used specific material and had a guide for subject matter. Students were mostly allowed to make choices for their subject matter. I taught grades K-5 and saw each class twice a week. 

Encanto Lesson
1st Grade

Objectives:

  • Shown various images, students will be able to identify how artists create characters and places to tell a story.

  • Using discussion, students will be able to learn about what community means. 

  • Using completed artwork, students will be able to explain how their character’s power helps the community and describe how their room was developed.

  • Using colored pencils and markers, students will be able to express an idea using color and drawings, by creating a character and a background.

  • Using completed artwork, students will be able to interpret by discussing how artistic decisions inform the meaning of artwork of their peers.

Enduring Understanding:

Students will understand how to formulate an idea/concept and using artistic intent convey said concept utilizing a two-dimensional medium.

Emotions Lesson
5th Grade

Objectives:

  • Shown various images, students will be able to define expressionism and identify how emotions can be communicated through use of colors.

  • Using discussion, students will define emotions and how they affect people as a way to brainstorm an idea for how they will create their artwork. 

  • Using ideation, students will be able to plan out an idea that will communicate intended meaning to viewers through the use of color and subject matter. 

  • Given a variety of materials, students will be able to apply their knowledge of wet and dry media to create a collage. 

  • Using completed artwork, students will be able to write a response reflecting on how and why their artwork was made. 

  • Using completed artwork, students will be able to interpret multiple perspectives through written response and discussion of peers' artworks.

Enduring Understanding:

Students will understand how to formulate an idea and using artistic intent and choice of material, convey said idea in a final artwork.

"I chose happy because that was the first emotion that came to mind. My favorites part of this artwork is the tissue paper and the outline in it. First in this project I used the sponge to make the pink background and then added tissue paper. Then I outlined the tissue paper and then I was finished."

"I chose anxiety because I felt that it’s the best emotion to describe with art. my favorite part of my art work is the lily pads. My least favorite part was the person in the middle. Three materials I used were, watercolor, yarn, tissue paper, and different markers."

I chose happy because I always try to be happy. My favorite part of this art is the moose because it’s big and pops out. My least favorite part is the faded heart because it was supposed to say I heart my mom. I use paint markers and paper to do my art work."

My least favorite is the red at the top I think it doesn’t match the color scheme.to create this artwork I thought of things that make me happy and I thought of the mountains. The three materials that I used are sharpies, shape printers, and paint."

"I chose happiness for my work. I chose this emotion because it is one of my favorite emotions to feel.

My favorite part of my work is the part where I went around and let everyone put what made them happy on the paper. My least favorite part is the smile in the middle.

I used paper scraps to make a smile, painted a heart and drew happy on the top of the appear. I splashes different paints on the paper and told people to write what makes them happy on it."

"I chose the emotion bold. I chose this because a it was different and unique. My favorite favorite part is how small the person is compared to the bubbles. I don’t like how the bubbles got crushed. I first splash painted, then put tissue paper into a triangle arch, and colored the mountains and person, lastly I added the quote. I used paint, tissue paper, and drawing."

"The emotion that I had chosen to show was sad but people were thinking that was happy and it made me upset. I had had used paint, tissue paper, and zig-zag scissors."

"Loss, because I was experiencing something that made me think about it. I like the mouth. I don’t like the line at the top. I splashed paint all over it and then cut a big hole in the middle of the paper and finally I added teeth and strings. Paint, scissors, and string is the materials I used."
