Instruction and Assessment

Assessment in the art room is an ongoing process that continuously informs my instruction. It all starts with clear expectations so that students know exactly what is expected of them. Then throughout the art making process, I continuously check in with my students and conduct countless formative assessments to ensure that they are on track. This allows me to correct students in the moment so they do not get too far off track and need to back peddle. Some examples of formative assessments that I use are discussion, questioning, and written statements. These formative assessments allow me to adjust my instruction in the moment for the whole class and on an individual level, and allows the students to adjust their work prior to turning it in, which gives them the best chance of success. This also provides me with the chance to see the student's process which is just as important as the final product.

Summative assessment comes in the form of their final artwork and a reflection. This is where I take everything that the student has done in this project and assess how well they met the objectives. This includes all the process and conversations I have had with the students. I use this assessment to assess not only where my students are at with their understanding but also where I am at with my teaching. I look for patterns in my students data to see if there are any common themes that got missed and could contribute to my teaching. Assessment in my opinion is just as much for assessing my students as it is for assessing myself.
