Standards Portfolio

I thoroughly enjoyed my student teaching experience at both Hygiene Elementary and Silver Creek High School. At Hygiene Elementary everyday of the week was different. For the most part third- fifth grade was in the morning and kinder-second grade was in the afternoon. It was a mostly teacher led classroom but I am grateful as my cooperating teacher Mrs. Kleyn allowed me a lot of freedom with lesson planning and I was able to try things out. She provided me with a lot of feedback on my lesson and made sure that I was reflecting on what went well and what could have gone better. One of my favorite experiences was trying out a fully choice based lesson with fifth grade. I provided full range of material and gave the theme of emotions. It was amazing to see the artwork these students created. My favorite part of teaching elementary students was seeing them discover something new. When they created a new color, or had success with a drawing or sculpture, the joy and excitement they had was the best thing ever to witness.

My experience at Silver Creek High School was in a choice based classroom. I taught two sections of painting, two sections of 2D and a section of drawing while also sitting in on the AP class. Mrs. Giese provided me with a framework for the unit and the topics that I needed to cover. I was allowed freedom of how I taught those skills and lessons and was able to try different things out. I really appreciated the framework for the unit and the experience of getting to create units. I was given advice and feedback when needed and was always reflecting on how my lesson went. I had a blast teaching at the high school level. I loved getting the chance to talk to students about real life ideas and helping them sort out what they wanted to create art about.
