I believe that a good classroom management plan is one that involves the students. I have found it important for students to have a say in what the classroom rules and consequences are. This helps to hold students responsible. My job is to be the facilitator. It is vital to hold students responsible for their actions as well as for the classroom. Students are in charge of cleaning up after themselves and ensuring that stations are put back in order. I have faith in my students to learn self control and participate in the class.

In order for our classroom to run smoothly, we will establish rules and responsibilities and spend time getting to know each other with in the first week of class. This will aid in the building of our classroom community. I aim to create a safe and inclusive environment where students feel comfortable learning and exploring new ideas. Risk is encouraged and mistakes are a welcome learning opportunity. The art room is a place for students to explore their own thoughts and ideas and express themselves in different ways.

Students are encouraged to explore their ideas through choice. I believe in a choice based classroom where students can freely move between different material stations. It is my opinion that choice allows for more active engagement. I have found that without choice, there will always be a few students who are not interested in the activity. Choice allows for students to choose how they want to create and what they want to create, which in turn provides a higher chance of students being actively involved in class. 

 

Safety

When it comes to safety in the art room, it is important to be clear and firm. Students must understand that there are specific safety rules in place for a reason. I believe it is important for students to understand why these rules are in place and what happens if they are not followed. Safety rules are posted around the classroom where appropriate and students will be reminded of them often. 

 

Differentiation

Differentiations and accommodation in the art room is important. I want all students to have the chance to participate and create. I work closely with student support staff to ensure that they are provided with opportunities to participate. Any material provided will be accessible in different formats such as text to speech, video, large print, braille, etc. I also will have a space for an alternative environment set up. 

 

Communication

I believe that communication with parents is important not only when issues arise. I aim to make at least two phone calls to parents each week to report good performance. Any issues that come up will be met with a phone call to parents as they happen.
