Hate Speech

A digital citizenship concept that I would model for my students is countering hate speech. It seems that it is everywhere and learning what to do about it when you encounter it is important for students to learn. Do they ignore it? Retaliate? Report it? Does reporting it do anything? These are all questions that I would address with my students. In my teaching I would model this through conversation. Hate speech happens online and offline, and while it is easier for people online to use hate speech and to cyber bully, learning how to handle it offline is an equally important skill and can translate to dealing with it online as well.
Since my content is art and students will be looking at each others art and talking about what is successful and not so successful, it is a great opportunity to learn about how to react when another gives you criticism, or disagrees with your views or ideas. I believe that having a conversation that allows each other to understand each person's point of view is important and a great communication skill. I would have students do a project based on cyber bullying and hate speech to explore how it feels and what to do about it. I would empower my students to do something about it and to know that they are strong and don't need to hide behind a screen like those who post hateful things do.
