News and Media Literacy

Updated: Mar 8, 2020

A digital citizenship concept that I will model as a teacher is digital media literacy. I believe it to be important for students to have an understanding of how to conduct themselves online and how certain things that are posted appear to others such as parents, teachers, and employers. I also find it important for students to learn about credible sources online. It can be hard to know what to believe and what not to believe online and having students understand how to tell if a source is credible or not is extremely important especially when looking for information to use.

This is a concept that I can embed in my content area through creating “Instagram posts”. Many people post their artwork online for others to see and I think this creates an interesting opportunity to teach students an appropriate way of posting and to teach them about appropriately conducting themselves online through posting their content and commenting on others. In addition to learning about appropriate conduct, it is also important for students to learn about source credibility. This can be taught through research about artists and artistic time periods. After conducting a quick mini lesson about how to determine if a source is credible and how to find these sources, I would then allow students time to conduct their own research utilizing credible sources.
